Sometimes keeping colors muted and values toned down creates a more interesting image. That is what I am exploring in my new series,‘Portraits in Gray’. I’m working on portraits of North American mammals primarily using various tones and values of grays and browns.
The second painting in the series is‘Portraits in Gray-Bull Moose’ whichfeatures a bull Shiras moose, the species that inhabit the US and Canadian Rockies. Several other artists and I were on a fall reference trip when we found this old bull wandering along a stream near the Grand Tetons. September is when the rut or breeding season occurs and bulls focus on finding and breeding cows coming into heat. We were fortunate to be able to spend over an hour with this 1,000-pound beast taking hundreds of reference photos and studying his behavior.
