This ram's massive horns, with worn points, show why he's king in this corner of the red rock desert.

The desert bighorn is a subspecies of bighorn adapted to the dry southwestern US and Mexico. They are able to go for extended periods without drinking. Their unique concave elastic hooves enable them to navigate the steep, rocky terrain to avoid predators. Rams horns are larger than those of ewes and grow larger throughout their lives. Older rams such as this one may rub away or "broom" the tips of their horns so they don't block their field of vision.
