I photographed this impressive bull moose while he was checking out a local cow moose on a September morning near a trout pond in northern Colorado.

Moose are the largest member of the deer family, and like their relatives, the males or bulls shed their antlers annually at the end of the breeding season. Unlike deer, elk, and caribou, however, moose are not social animals and are normally solitary (outside of calving and breeding seasons). They are browsers feeding on leaves, bark, twigs, and buds of trees and shrubs. They also like to eat aquatic plants and are able to close their nostrils while feeding underwater.
